  • Course Description:
    • This advanced course provides a comprehensive review of the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the assessment of spinal whiplash injuries. Participants will explore evidence-based MRI protocols, interpret common and subtle findings, including ligamentous injury, disc pathology, edema, and myofascial involvement, and correlate imaging features with clinical presentations.
  • Hourly Breakdown:
    • Hour 1: Foundations of Whiplash and MRI Technology
      • Introduction to whiplash trauma: Biomechanics and tissue injury (15 min)
      • MRI principles: Sequences, planes, and safety considerations (15 min)
      • Indications for MRI in whiplash cases (10 min)
      • Overview of normal vs. abnormal spinal MRI appearance (20 min)
    • Hour 2: MRI Interpretation of Whiplash-Related Pathology
      • Ligamentous injuries: Alar, transverse, posterior longitudinal ligaments (15 min)
      • Disc pathology: Annular tears, herniation, desiccation (15 min)
      • Facet joint injury and capsular edema (10 min)
      • Bone marrow edema, endplate injury, and uncovertebral joint pathology (10 min)
      • Clinical case studies with image review and interpretation (10 min)
    • Hour 3: Clinical Application and Medico-Legal Relevance
      • Integrating MRI findings into chiropractic clinical decision-making (15 min)
      • When to refer: Red flags, missed fractures, and neurologic compromise (10 min)

Dr. James Demetrious is a nationally distinguished, board certified chiropractic orthopedist. He is a clinician, educator, author, and editor. Dr. Demetrious teaches post-graduate coursework on behalf of Northeast College of Health Sciences. He is a member of the NCMIC Speakers’ Bureau and teaches post-graduate coursework throughout the United States. He has published peer-reviewed journal papers related to advanced differential diagnosis.
