Course Description:
- This one-hour postgraduate lecture provides a focused, clinically relevant approach to the evaluation of wrist and hand pain and dysfunction. Emphasis is placed on functional and MRI anatomy, common mechanisms of injury, orthopedic examination strategies, and appropriate imaging utilization in both acute trauma and chronic conditions. Participants will learn to correlate examination findings with imaging features to improve diagnostic accuracy, recognize carpal instability patterns, identify red flags, and determine when conservative care versus referral is indicated.
Hourly Breakdown:
- Hour 1:
- Functional anatomy and biomechanics of the wrist and hand
- Common injury mechanisms and clinical presentations
- Orthopedic examination principles and key special tests
- Imaging considerations in acute trauma and chronic wrist/hand pain
- Carpal instability patterns, fractures, ligament injuries, and arthritides
- Case-based clinical pearls and referral indicators
Learning Objectives:
- Perform an evidence-informed orthopedic examination of the wrist and hand for common injuries and pain syndromes.
- Correlate clinical findings with imaging to refine differential diagnoses and recognize instability patterns.
- Identify red flags and conditions requiring modification of care or referral to medical or surgical specialists.
